Job Description:

THE OPPORTUNITY

 

Working with the non-profit organization that presents the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the incumbent works with the operations and technology team to ensure the continued development and maintenance of the organization’s tech stacks and technical products. Central to this role is the launch, maintenance, support, and enhancement of the Scholastic Awards Portal, a serverless management system that is used to implement all aspects of the Scholastic Awards program, set to launch in September of 2023.

 

Responsibilities

 

Support the development and implementation of the organization’s technology plan and infrastructure:

 

  • Work across the full stack, develop new features and infrastructure for the newly developed Awards Portal
  • Assume leadership of new projects, from conceptualization to deployment
  • Ensure application performance, uptime, and scale, and maintain high standards for code quality and application design
  • Work with agile development methodologies, adhering to best practices and pursuing continued learning opportunities
  • Working under the guidance of the Manager of Web & Information Services, engage in day-to-day development work and technical support:
  • Provide day-to-day support for the Awards Portal and artandwriting.org
  • Participate in all aspects of agile software development, including design, implementation, and deployment
  • Work primarily in React, JavaScript, using industry standard frameworks like NextJS
  • Provide guidance on building and maintaining end-to-end systems optimized for speed and scale within serverless environments
  • Engage with inspiring designers and front-end engineers, and collaborate with leading back-end engineers to create reliable APIs
  • Collaborate across time zones via Teams, Jira, GitHub
  • Provide technical support for the organization’s team as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications

 

  • Previous experience building web applications
  • Previous experience designing and integrating RESTful APIs
  • Front-end knowledge of React, JavaScript
  • Experience in debugging and optimization skills, unit/integration testing
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) or technical certification (e.g. Bootcamp) in computer science, information technology, or engineering strongly preferred
  • Interest in learning new tools, languages, workflows, and philosophies
  • Interest in creative fields (e.g. art and writing) and/or mission-driven non-profits a plus
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills and the ability to work with both technically savvy colleagues and those with limited technological expertise
