Job Title: Principal API Engineer

Location: Remote (U.S.-based candidates only | Must have 4+ hours of overlap with Pacific Time)

About the Role:

We are seeking a Principal API Engineer to join a cutting-edge, healthcare-focused initiative. This is a high-impact role for an expert API engineer who thrives in fast-paced environments and is passionate about designing and implementing secure, scalable, and high-performance API solutions. You will play a pivotal role in driving the technical direction of our integration ecosystem while ensuring compliance with industry regulations, including HIPAA.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Design, develop, and optimize ultra-low latency APIs with response times under 2 seconds
2. Integrate APIs across multiple applications, services, and data layers
3. Implement robust API monitoring, exception handling, and high availability strategies
4. Set up API analytics and tracking mechanisms for traffic monitoring, security, and usage-based invoicing
5. Build and deploy backend services supporting personalized health calculations and medical recommendations
6. Work in a cloud-native environment, exclusively using AWS or GCP (Azure is not used)
7. Apply best practices to ensure HIPAA compliance and data governance across all APIs
8. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure scalable and secure B2B and SaaS API development

Required Skills & Experience:

1. 8+ years of software development experience with a strong focus on API engineering
2. Proven expertise in designing and deploying RESTful APIs and/or GraphQL APIs
3. Deep experience with cloud platforms, specifically AWS or GCP
4. Demonstrated ability to build scalable, secure, and highly available API systems
5. Strong knowledge of microservices architecture, API gateways, and authentication protocols (OAuth2, JWT, etc.)
6. Experience with API analytics, monitoring tools, and rate-limiting techniques
7. Familiarity with HIPAA regulations and implementing compliant data handling solutions
8. Prior experience with SaaS and/or B2B product APIs at enterprise scale
9. Strong troubleshooting, debugging, and performance tuning skills
10. Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently in a remote setup

Nice to Have:

1. Experience in the healthcare or health tech domain
2. Familiarity with FHIR or HL7 standards
3. Background in building APIs for personalized health recommendations or digital therapeutics
