Job Title: Principal API Engineer

About the Role:
We are seeking a Principal API Engineer to join a cutting-edge, healthcare-focused initiative. This is a high-impact role for an expert API engineer who thrives in fast-paced environments and is passionate about designing and implementing secure, scalable, and high-performance API solutions. You will play a pivotal role in driving the technical direction of our integration ecosystem while ensuring compliance with industry regulations, including HIPAA.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and optimize ultra-low latency APIs with response times under 2 seconds
- Integrate APIs across multiple applications, services, and data layers
- Implement robust API monitoring, exception handling, and high availability strategies
- Set up API analytics and tracking mechanisms for traffic monitoring, security, and usage-based invoicing
- Build and deploy backend services supporting personalized health calculations and medical recommendations
- Work in a cloud-native environment, exclusively using AWS or GCP (Azure is not used)
- Apply best practices to ensure HIPAA compliance and data governance across all APIs
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure scalable and secure B2B and SaaS API development
Required Skills & Experience:
- 8+ years of software development experience with a strong focus on API engineering
- Proven expertise in designing and deploying RESTful APIs and/or GraphQL APIs
- Deep experience with cloud platforms, specifically AWS or GCP
- Demonstrated ability to build scalable, secure, and highly available API systems
- Strong knowledge of microservices architecture, API gateways, and authentication protocols (OAuth2, JWT, etc.)
- Experience with API analytics, monitoring tools, and rate-limiting techniques
- Familiarity with HIPAA regulations and implementing compliant data handling solutions
- Prior experience with SaaS and/or B2B product APIs at enterprise scale
- Strong troubleshooting, debugging, and performance tuning skills
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently in a remote setup
Nice to Have:
- Experience in the healthcare or health tech domain
- Familiarity with FHIR or HL7 standards
- Background in building APIs for personalized health recommendations or digital therapeutics
