Founded in 2019, Equis is a set of organizations working to create a better understanding of the Latino electorate, invest in new and innovative approaches to reach and engage them, and uplift the Latino leaders of tomorrow who will implement and carry forward this important work. We envision a world where Latinos are influential and powerful. To make this a reality, we believe we need to start by changing how Latinos see themselves and how the rest of the country sees them. Our community, democracy, and country deserve a future that is built for and by Latinos.
Moonshots are a series of 5-10 year projects designed to fill crucial gaps in the arenas of democracy, culture, media, and talent. The scope of our work is purposefully broad and designed to engage Latinos in multiple arenas because we believe that this moment requires a complete re-thinking of how we engage Latinos. Our approach is to work collaboratively with partners and allies, lead with learning and research, and build programs that address the deep-rooted issues that prevent our community from participating becoming influential and powerful. The Front Page of the Internet role will oversee a Moonshot that spans democracy, media, and culture.
Our Democracy Moonshots are designed to radically transform the civic experience of Latinos in this country and raise their participation in elections and civic life to levels commensurate with their potential as the second largest voting bloc in the country.
Culture Moonshots are intended to develop and deploy a Latino cultural strategy that creates community and expansive cultural norms, tells a new story by and for Latinos, and creates moments that prime the Latino community for mass mobilization.
Media Moonshots are Equis initiatives to change the media landscape for Latinos by creating original content on existing platforms like YouTube.
Talent Moonshots are designed to deepen and improve the bench of Latino talent so our community has a seat at the table across all industries but especially government, civic organizations, policy, and philanthropy.
Reporting to the Director of Strategic Initiatives for Culture and Media, Equis is seeking an experienced candidate to oversee our narrative work within our Culture Moonshot. This position will develop and implement a long-term strategy for creating and disseminating new narratives about Latinos on and offline and seek new opportunities across the narrative space. This will include overseeing two new Culture Moonshots called “Story” and “Front Page of the Internet”. This position will oversee a small team of organizers, communicators, trainers, and consultants to actualize our narrative work.
Everyday millions of Latinos rely on search engines, digital platforms, and open sources online resources to access information and better understand the world around them. But right now, Latinos have little to no role in adding to information they encounter on some of the most common open platforms. These open source information sites are critical sources of information for Latinos, but our people, stories, and narratives are often not present and there are very few Latino contributors. The Front Page of the Internet Moonshot will organize and develop strategies to ensure that key information on sites that Latinos use daily reflect their experiences, histories, icons, and interests. In year one, this project will pilot a new program to train a cadre of Latino editors and contributors to improve open source and key sites of information used by Latinos internet searchers.
The Latino community is one of story-tellers. However, the narratives that we tell ourselves and are told about us do not reflect the complexity of our community or help us to feel powerful or influential. The Story Moonshot will develop new programs, infrastructure, strategies, and ways of thinking that create more authentic and contemporary narratives about Latinos. In year one, this project will focus on research about the narratives that are most prevalent within our community and society and map a path forward for the new narratives that we want institutions and individuals to utilize.
