Communications Associate
Location: Remote (U.S.-based)
Reports To: Director of Communications
Status: Full-time, Exempt
Position Summary
The Alliance is seeking a highly motivated Communications Associate to support the Director of Communications and the broader team in advancing our mission through impactful storytelling, media, and design. The ideal candidate will be a creative communicator with a strong background in graphic design, digital media, and copywriting, as well as excellent project management skills. Preference will be given to applicants with a passion for Tribal sovereignty, climate justice, and clean energy.
This position requires both creative talent and strong organizational skills to ensure projects and information flow seamlessly between the Director of Communications, department heads, and our external agency of record.
Key Responsibilities
Working closely with the Alliance Director of Communications and department heads:
Content Creation & Design
- Develop graphic design materials for web, social media, presentations, reports, and print.
- Design and format newsletters, fact sheets, and other communications collateral.
- Ensure all designs and communications align with Alliance brand guidelines and values, including accessible and inclusive design principles (e.g., proper color contrast, alt-text, readable fonts).
Social Media & Digital Communications
- Create and manage a social media content calendar that reflects ongoing campaigns, seasonal opportunities, and organizational priorities.
- Draft and schedule posts for regular content as well as emergent/timely updates in response to news, policy developments, or Alliance initiatives.
- Create basic video content and graphics for social media platforms, including short-form videos, reels, and stories.
- Manage day-to-day posting, monitoring, and engagement across social media platforms.
- Track analytics to measure reach, engagement, and growth, and provide regular reports.
Project Coordination & Flow
- Serve as the communications point-of-contact between the Director of Communications, Alliance department heads, and our agency of record.
- Manage communications calendars and ensure deadlines are met.
- Support internal communication processes to keep leadership informed on projects, campaigns, and deliverables.
General Communications Support
- Assist in drafting press releases, op-eds, and announcements.
- Maintain up-to-date website content in coordination with external partners.
- Contribute to developing strategies for media relations, storytelling, and campaigns.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, graphic design, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 2–4+ years recent professional experience in communications, including graphic design for websites, print, and digital media.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) and/or Canva.
- Experience with social media management tools (e.g., Hootsuite, Buffer, or other related platforms).
- Strong social media writing, editing, and copywriting skills with attention to detail.
- Knowledge of web accessibility standards (WCAG guidelines)
- Email marketing platform experience (Mailchimp, Constant Contact)
- Excellent organizational skills; ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Experience working in or alongside small communities strongly preferred.
- Commitment to the mission of advancing Tribal sovereignty, clean energy, and climate justice.
Compensation & Benefits
- $62,000-$67,000, commensurate with experience.
- Generous and comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, and vision insurance; 401(k) retirement plan with employer match; and generous paid time off.
- Remote position with flexible schedule, travel to Alliance events (up to 25%) may be required.
