Job Description:

Please note: this is not a software engineering role. This position requires a strong creative background.

We’re hiring an experienced Web Designer with expertise in designing and building websites across a range of platforms and CMS environments. You’ll be responsible for assisting the web team on the execution of full web projects—from planning and prototyping to front-end development and back-end configuration. This is a hybrid position requiring candidates to be based in the Greater Boston area, with regular in-person collaboration at our Boston office.

This role requires strong proficiency in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and PHP, as well as the ability to work within CMS platforms such as WordPress, Webflow, Squarespace, etc. Experience with CMS platforms used by enterprise and higher education organizations is a plus. You should be confident in developing custom page layouts, managing plugin or module configurations, and optimizing sites for accessibility, performance, and SEO.

The ideal candidate is comfortable leading technical discussions, creating sitemaps and high-fidelity prototypes in Figma, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. This position reports to the Director of Web Services.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Build and maintain responsive websites using HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and PHP across various CMS platforms, including but not limited to WordPress and Webflow.
  2. Develop and customize websites using code and/or visual such as Elementor, Bricks Builder, Advanced Custom Fields, or JetEngine.
  3. Manage plugin and module configuration, including setting up custom fields and reusable content blocks.
  4. Ensure compliance with accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1) and implement on-page SEO best practices.
  5. Integrate and manage tracking tools like Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager.
  6. Create and maintain sitemaps, wireframes, and interactive prototypes using Figma or equivalent tools.
  7. Translate UI/UX designs into functional, user-friendly pages while maintaining design fidelity.
  8. Collaborate with internal teams to provide insight on project timelines, scopes, and technical requirements
  9. Perform thorough QA, cross-browser/device testing, and ongoing performance optimization.
  10. Stay current with web development trends, tools, and best practices.
  11. Assist in creative design as needed—including designing graphics for landing pages, email templates, and marketing campaigns.

Qualifications:

  1. 2+ years of experience in web design and development, ideally in an agency or client-facing environment.
  2. Strong understanding of SEO, web accessibility, and responsive design principles.
  3. Experience creating structured content, user flows, and scalable design systems.
  4. Proven ability to present work in a persuasive, clear, and professional manner.
  5. Ensure meticulous attention to detail in all submitted work, reviewing, and ensuring readiness for internal review and external client deliverables.
  6. Exceptional ability to receive and implement feedback from both the internal team and clients
  7. Ability to work independently and multi-task in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  8. Willingness to support broader creative initiatives as needed.
  9. A portfolio showcasing both development and design capabilities is required.

Proficient in:

  1. HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, PHP
  2. Several CMS Platforms: Including but not limited to WordPress, Webflow, etc.
  3. Figma and Adobe Creative Suite (or similar for prototyping and asset creation)
  4. Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager

Education:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Web Design, Information Technology, Graphic Design, or related field of study preferred.

Bonus Skills (nice to have but not required):

  1. Experience with e-commerce platforms (e.g., Shopify, WooComererce).
  2. Animation & Interactive UI – Experience with GSAP, Lottie, or CSS animations.
  3. CRM & Marketing Automation – Experience integrating web platforms with HubSpot, Salesforce, or Mailchimp.
  4. API Development & Integration – Familiarity with RESTful and GraphQL APIs.
  5. Proficiency with SQL.
