Job Description:

Unite America is a non-partisan, philanthropic venture fund that invests in campaigns and organizations in order to advance nonpartisan election reforms that will foster a more representative and functional government capable of solving America’s most pressing challenges.

Founded in 2014, Unite America and its 30-person team has grown to be a leader in the democracy reform movement. The organization has existed in its current form, and with its current primary focus, since 2019; in that time, we have successfully mobilized tens of millions of dollars from scores of philanthropists to reform campaigns across the country.

Recent victories where we played a leading or a major supporting role include: adopting a first-of-its-kind, final-four voting system in Alaska that helped elect one of the most ideologically diverse slate of statewide officeholders in recent history, implementing Ranked Choice Voting in NYC, the largest expansion of RCV in history; winning a major anti-gerrymandering campaign in Virginia;; and helping to pass a citizen-led ballot initiative in Nevada to implement Alaska-style reforms in that state. We are poised to dramatically scale our impact in the years to come.

Organizationally, we are committed to building a team that reflects diverse identities, experiences, and perspectives; a culture of working across differences toward common goals; and a workplace where everyone feels included, respected and heard.

Overview

Unite America seeks a Vice President of Fundraising to join our leadership team. This person will be responsible for frontline fundraising activities and assisting in building relationships with new major donors to our organization, as well as ensuring the long-term success of our existing donors. This is an exciting opportunity for an enterprising and mission-driven individual not only to drive execution of this role but, more broadly, to help lead the build and design of the investment-generating function itself. The ability to operate comfortably beyond the confines of traditional fundraising frameworks is essential for success in this role. This is a full-time, remote position with full benefits that reports to the Head of Investor Relations and works very closely with the Executive Director, UA leadership team, and UA Board and Board Co-Chair. A location in our HQ market of Denver, CO is an added plus, but not required.

Primary Responsibilities

Together with the Head of Investor Relations, design and execute an overall investor-generation strategy to hit defined investment fund targets & goals, primarily from significant, transformational, individual gifts.

Oversee and manage a team of front-line fundraisers — some of whom are to be hired, and where you will play an active role in the hiring process to ensure the selection of qualified candidates.

  • Identify, design, and execute opportunities to meet one-on-one with prospects & donors in order to engage with, and solicit from, investor prospects — e.g., in virtual presentations; at salon dinners in local markets; at conferences, summits, and events; or in other contexts as you recommend and see fit.
  • Collaborate closely with UA's Executive Director and our Co-Chairs in the engagement with, solicitation from, and stewardship of their own portfolios of prospects & donors.
  • Exhibit a robust understanding and ease in handling principal gifts, and revenue streams related to c4, PAC, and traditional c3 structures.
  • Maintain a strong, up-to-date understanding of UA’s program work, so as to effectively represent the organization and present a compelling case for supporting our work financially.
  • Coordinate with UA's Program staff to seek their help in engaging with, and soliciting from, investor prospects. Staff meetings and brief other relevant, participating UA staff appropriately for meetings.
  • Continue to refine UA’s value proposition and communication strategy to the philanthropic community, working closely with the Sr. Director of Investor Experience and with other internal departments.
  • Play your part in ensuring a clean and accurate data & reporting environment, working closely with the Sr. Director of Donor Strategy & Operations and with other internal departments.
  • Together with your colleagues on the Investor Relations Team, play a supporting role in the continued buildout of a department.

Essential Qualifications

  • Fundraising Experience: Minimum 6–8 years of front-line fundraising experience and/or in a front-line revenue-carrying role. Demonstrated record of high-dollar fundraising.
  • Management Experience: 3–5 years of management experience, preferably with a background in fundraising management.
  • External Relationship-Building Capabilities: Creativity, energy, and integrity in your dealings with others; ability to exercise discretion and respect for donor privacy.
  • Highly prefer candidates with a background in political fundraising or a strong understanding of policy and advocacy.
  • "Self-Starter" Orientation: A proactive, determined, self-directed & "can-do" disposition.
  • Demonstrates a player/coach mindset, adept at both guiding and actively participating in tasks.
  • Organized and Strategic Minded.
  • Communication Skills: Strong communication chops, excellent writing & speaking skills, as well as overall professionalism and attention to detail, and a good listener!
  • Intellectual Curiosity & Insightfulness: Genuine curiosity & passion about our work and our space, as well as the US political landscape more broadly.
  • The ideal candidate should thrive in a rapidly evolving and dynamic environment, demonstrating adaptability in the face of occasional ambiguity.
  • Humility, Respect, and a Commitment to Working Across Difference: Commitment to inclusivity and an ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives. Excitement to work on a team that spans political persuasions & ideologies, and to contribute further to that diversity.
  • Willingness to travel out of state, as required by the role.
  • Familiarity with the Salesforce platform is highly desirable, but not required.
  • A high degree of self-awareness and "personal security" (authentic self-confidence). Positive energy & mojo!

Salary

Salary for this role is expected to be in the range of $185,000-$225,000; the total remuneration will also include benefits. Unite America does not currently offer performance-based incentives, but this may change in future.
