We have a vacancy for a Special Agent in our Regulations Unit. Special Agents are duly sworn law enforcement officers and must meet the Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment. Although they are exempt from civil service, they have many of the same benefits as general service employees, including a generous insurance and leave package. They also belong to the Public Safety Employees Retirement System (PSERS) and have a flexible work schedule of 160 hours within 28-day work periods.


If you do not currently hold a law enforcement certification, you will have the opportunity to attend Basic Law Enforcement Academy through the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center.


This position will be assigned to the Spokane Field Office.

Regulations Agents assigned to this unit are based throughout the state and assigned to a geographic area. Agents regulate licensed gambling and provide technical assistance to gambling operations, and work with numerous licensee groups and law enforcement agencies. Agents also investigate criminal cases for the prosecution of illegal gambling activities and gambling related crimes. The common licensed forms of gambling that Special Agents regulate are Card Rooms, Pull Tabs, Raffles, Bingo, Fund Raising Events, and Amusement games. Special Agents also respond to complaints submitted to the agency and provide education and training to both the public and licensees.

Some of what you will do:


  • Respond to complaints in a timely manner.
  • Know our licensees and build good working relationships.
  • Conduct compliance checks as needed to determine and mitigate risk areas.
  • Work administrative and criminal investigations with a connection to gambling.
  • Participate on special projects and teams,
  • Demonstrate a good working relationship with federal, state, and local law enforcement and regulatory agencies by working jointly, sharing information, and by providing training.

Special Agent starting salary ranges from $61,591 - $82,865 annually, depending upon your education and experience.

Bill education benefits administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs may qualify for a supplemental monthly check while participating in an on-the-job training program. Required Qualifications

  • High school graduation, GED, or equivalent education.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire.

We may give preference to candidates with the following qualifications and experience


  • Current Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE)
  • Active or Retired Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Certifications that are job related
  • Degree’s that are job related
  • Successful completion of the WA State Basic Law Enforcement Academy, or equivalent law enforcement academy.
  • Documented fluency in Vietnamese, Chinese, Cambodian, Korean, Japanese, Russian or Spanish languages.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment

As a Washington State limited law enforcement officer, the Special Agent is required to complete a basic law enforcement academy or equivalency. If you do not hold a current law enforcement certification you may be required to attend the Basic Law Enforcement Academy through the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center. Prior experience and/or training as a fully commissioned peace officer, limited jurisdiction law enforcement officer for the State of Washington, or a Federal Law Enforcement training program may substitute for this requirement.
