Norwood News, founded in 1988 and located at 3400 Reservoir Oval East, Bronx, NY 10467, is an award-winning, biweekly, print community newspaper and website which primarily serves the Bronx neighborhoods of Norwood, Bedford Park, Kingsbridge, Kingsbridge Heights, Fordham Manor, University Heights, and Fordham Heights, and to a lesser extent, the wider Bronx. We are currently recruiting for an experienced, full-time reporter to join our team for one year, with a possibility but not a guarantee to extend.
The reporter will work closely with the editor-in-chief and other freelance reporters on our biweekly print and digital community newspaper. This position is funded by an Earmark from congress, additional specialized reporting on the grant’s progress will be part of this one-year position. The right candidate should have an interest in people and in the news, understand the difference between activism and journalism, understand attribution, balance, and fact-checking, have an open mind, be able to perform research on various topics, understand the structure of City and local government, have a keen eye for detail, have exceptional grammar and writing skills, and be familiar with the Northwest Bronx.

Responsibilities:

• Perform research on different topics.
• Analyze and interpret findings.
• Interview key people (witnesses, sources, etc.)
• Attend and report on community events and press conferences.
• Write articles with readers’ needs in mind.
• Deliver an accurate body of work from collected data.
• Establish contacts and sources for future research and stories.
• Maintain and provide to the editor back-up notes / records in written and in electronic form

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications or related field.
• 1 Year experience in the field
• Excellent communication skills and ability to effectively communicate with various personalities.
• Competent writing skills and ability to document research in a logical form.
• Good organization skills and time management.
• High levels of self- motivation to successfully and independently pursue leading local, national and international stories.
• Basic understanding of photography, voice recording devises and laptops.
