Job Description:

Gusto is a modern, online people platform that helps small businesses take care of their teams. On top of full-service payroll, Gusto offers health insurance, 401(k)s, expert HR, and team management tools. Today, Gusto offices in Denver, San Francisco, and New York serve more than 200,000 businesses nationwide.

Our mission is to create a world where work empowers a better life, and it starts right here at Gusto. That’s why we’re committed to building a collaborative and inclusive workplace, both physically and virtually. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy.

Our Opportunity: The way we connect with our customer's matters. Employees are busy. And small businesses? Even busier. People need an approachable language that gets to the point. The way we see it, the entire world of payroll, benefits, and HR could use a healthy dose of humanity. Ready for the challenge?

Our Brand Studio team is looking for a brilliant Lead Copywriter, pronto. What’s a Brand Studio? We’re a cross-disciplinary group of creatives focused on building a category-defining brand and making a meaningful impact on Gusto’s business.

Your role will be to work with stakeholders and designers to identify messaging opportunities and write marketing copy that communicates our value clearly (and with a bit of our classic Gusto charm). You’ll report to Gusto’s Design Director to produce content for email campaigns, landing pages, acquisition ads, video scripts, and more. We’re looking for a true word nerd—someone who loves creative problem-solving and is an expert collaborator—to come work with us full-time. This role is remote, Pacific Time Zone is a plus but not required.

Here’s what you’ll do:

  • Write, edit, and critique creative marketing concepts.
  • Mentor copywriters and designers by providing inspiring direction for both projects and professional growth.
  • Combine a deep understanding of Gusto’s features and value with empathy for our varied user base.
  • Consider performance and aim for measurable results.
  • Be a trusted source of expertise and guidance on the Gusto brand voice and tone.
  • Harness team strengths to push creativity to new heights and drive business success.
  • Present work to the creative team, stakeholders, and executives with energy and enthusiasm.
  • Foster working relationships with organizations and partners across the company, incorporating feedback while maintaining the integrity of the work.
  • Advocate for the brand and promote a higher standard for writing through relationship building and communication.
  • Maintain a compelling, on-brand voice and messaging strategy across marketing materials.
  • Help develop, manage, and evangelize the company’s copywriting style guide.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • 8+ years of professional copywriting experience.
  • A strong portfolio that shows off a variety of different projects and mediums
  • Experience managing creative teams.
  • Startup/in-house experience preferred (finance, healthcare, SaaS, small business a plus.)
  • Ability to take tricky, complex issues and distill them in human terms.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
  • Can-do attitude and good work ethic under tight deadlines.
  • Passion for Gusto’s mission and empowering businesses everywhere.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $140,000 - $166,000/year in Denver & most remote locations, and $166,000 - $195,000/year for San Francisco & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home with us.
