Job Description:

As a representative of EH&E's Healthcare team, a Staff Scientist I will operate in hospital research facilities. The Staff Scientist I is responsible for the successful execution of daily operations at our client sites, sometimes operating in teams or independently to accomplish various Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) tasks. As a Staff Scientist I, you will have the autonomy to accomplish assigned tasks ensuring the overall success of the client EHS program and develop your technical expertise.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Technical Expertise:

  • Oversee/perform risk assessments involving chemical and biological materials, at the direction of and with guidance from on-site subject matter experts as needed.
  • Manage/conduct air sampling and personal monitoring for specific materials used in the research environment.
  • Responsible for overseeing shipments of hazardous materials and biological materials; respond to occasional chemical, biological, and after-hours emergencies.
  • Responsible for incident investigations.
  • Ensure hazardous chemical waste program compliance.
  • Oversee/conduct periodic laboratory safety and biosafety inspections of laboratories by qualified personnel with respect to federal, state, and local government regulations and agencies' policies. Conduct follow-up with laboratory personnel.
  • Responsible for development of regulatory/recertification calendar, working with Project Manager when appropriate.
  • Be a client and junior staff resource to answer EHS related questions, using knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, with the ability to provide regulatory reference as needed.
  • Manage/perform routine laboratory maintenance tasks i.e. eye wash/shower testing, door sign updates, inventory collections, fume hood testing ect.
  • Update written materials regarding biological safety and laboratory EHS (e.g., Biosafety Manual, Chemical Hygiene Plan, Hazard Communication Plan, etc.).
  • Manage/perform respiratory protection fit-testing, as needed.
  • Prepare and deliver laboratory EH&S training programs to clients and junior staff.
  • Lead and participate in troubleshooting activities and Laboratory Safety Committee meetings.
  • Responsible for permit applications/management with assistance from senior staff when appropriate.
  • Other duties as required.

Sales & Client Relations:

  • As a representative of EH&E, provide timely communication to client and internal EH&E requests.
  • Be the primary contact providing solutions to client questions by soliciting support from Project Manager (PM)/Subject Matter Experts (SME) as needed.
  • Play a vital part in sales by taking on potential opportunities or identifying gaps with new clients.
  • Proactively develop client relationship with senior staff to understand and identify client deficiencies, provide solutions, and expand current services as needed.

Project Management:

  • Lead small projects with oversite from senior staff.
  • Assist Project Managers on coordinating and completing larger more complex projects.
  • Develop small project proposals and budget with oversight from senior staff and ME.

QA/QC:

  • Manage the collection and presentation of quality data (may include but not limited to observations collected during lab inspections) following specified quality control procedures and alert project managers on any deviations in procedures.
  • Inspect, test and audit the performance of client equipment based on established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). Provide guidance to junior staff as needed.

Communication and Reports:

  • Responsible for investigating problems and maintaining databases.
  • Crafts emails, memos, manuals, simple reports, and contribute significantly to complex reports.
  • Develop SOP's and communications based on scientific knowledge/safety.
  • Responsible for client communication and report writing for small projects managed.

Financial Management:

  • Independently manage small projects and project contributors to hit expected utilization/billing goals.
  • Work with senior staff to proactively seek opportunities for project work to hit individual billing/utilization expectations.
  • Be able to work within the deadlines of a specific project. Communicate any issues with project manager.
  • As the project manager, review pre-bills.
  • Craft proposals and budgets for small projects with help from senior management.

Minimum Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

  • Bachelors degree required.
  • Bachelors degree in a related field (biology, microbiology, molecular biology, safety, industrial hygiene, chemistry, engineering or environmental science) preferred.
  • 3+ year of experience working in EHS or closely related field required.
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment as a bench scientist or EHS professional preferred.
  • OSHA 40/HAZWOPER, DOT/RCRA preferred.
  • Possess teamwork, analytical & organizational skills.
  • Ability to lead and manage small projects preferred.
  • Ability to identify potential project opportunities preferred.
  • Proficient with Microsoft suite of products – Word, Excel, Outlook & PowerPoint.
  • Driver's license required. Must be comfortable with traveling to and working from different client locations.
  • Must be comfortable with occasional weekend work as needed & on-call emergency duties required.
  • Business ownership thinking and entrepreneurial attitude/self-starter attitude preferred.
  • Ability to be open and flexible to new project experiences.
