MANAGING EDITOR IMPACT:
Responsible for the development, launch, growth, and expansion of the companies digital media business, including newsletters, videos, podcasts and other digital-only products that resonate with readers, listeners and viewers. Ensures the timely creation and publication of a large volume of high interest stories in daily newsletters and a dedicated website, working with staff, contract writers and partners to master the Axios Smart Brevity communication style. Supports and enables systems that deliver engaging and positive user experiences, and meets established revenue targets. Proactively facilitates linkage with all the companies media including periodicals, journals, webinars, conferences, and other activities.
MANAGING EDITOR DETAILS:
1. Lead and take ownership of the companies digital media strategy, developing products that set us apart from competitors, deliver clear value to audiences, and provide ROI for advertisers and sponsors
2. Produce content ideas and manage writing and production schedules to deliver a portfolio of daily/weekly digital newsletters that inform and entertain geoscience professionals, alert them to current trends in the industry, and direct them to cutting edge scientific and technological resources
3. Identify, create and curate information that is timely and relevant to customers; grow and nurture an active network of correspondents and industry contributors to continually boost the teams research, writing, and story telling capabilities
4. Lead and collaborate with colleagues and partners to evolve SmartBrevity writing, editing and delivery capabilities across all media channels; provide quality controls and training where needed
5. Develop, track and analyze key performance indicators and meaningful content measurements to continually enhance product offerings
6. Turn copy into clear, engaging stories on tight deadlines, and simultaneously manage a stringer network, art & photo desks, web support, and marketing and sales efforts
7. Retain a strong grasp of social media trends and techniques and an understanding of their roles in maintaining and growing online audiences
8. Help create marketing materials to support internal and external communication needs, including sales collateral, case studies, thought leadership and regular social media posts
9. Oversee negotiations with vendors, monitor and approve invoices, assist in establishing advertising rates and policies, and manage the profit and loss objectives of the group
10. Manage direct reports to assure productivity, efficiency, and continuous improvement of the staff. Monitor and evaluate performance and provide coaching, training and corrective actions as required.
MANAGING EDITOR BACKGROUND:
A 4-year degree in journalism or mass communication or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training is required for this position.
A minimum of 5 years’ successfully creating and implementing digital information and data
strategies and attracting and growing digital audiences;
Demonstrated experience in a newsroom setting managing the creation, curation and delivery of digital content, including writing and editing for a deadline-driven, online information organization
Highly knowledgeable in social media content creation with a deep knowledge of channel strategy and optimizing campaigns
Demonstrated strong technical skills in digital production, with a high degree of literacy in CRM strategies and systems management
Experience motivating teams of writers, correspondents, guest contributors, artists, etc. to work collaboratively in a creative environment
Ability to analyze audience responses and use the data to meet engagement and revenue targets
Proven ability to successfully oversee and complete cross-department projects
