Reporting to the Communications Director, the Digital Communications Strategist will collaborate with the communications, legal, policy, and development staff and be primarily responsible for executing the organization’s digital communications strategy, including videography and editing, animation, motion graphics, photography, graphic design, website design and maintenance. This position will also contribute to and collaborate on press and media releases, newsletters, social media management, blog posts, and key administrative support, as needed. The Digital Communications Strategist will work with the executive leadership and Communications team on ImmDef’s external communications with a special focus on communication to ImmDef’s clients and other immigrant community members. This position will help execute a communications strategy that focuses on immigrant justice, welcoming immigrants with dignity, and protecting due process for all.
Essential Duties:
- Content Creation
- Translate immigration law and policy into easy-to-understand know-your-rights explainers in written, graphic, and video formats for various audiences, particularly ImmDef clients. Oversee translation of this content into various languages.
- Create visually stunning, humanizing, and compelling bilingual (English/Spanish) content that is aligned with ImmDef’s branding and mission including static and motion graphics, photography, animation, and video for various social media platforms (e.g., Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Bluesky, Threads, and TikTok), ImmDef’s website, client education events, fundraising, or task force and coalition needs.
- Write captivating and accurate bilingual (English/Spanish) social media copy, video scripts, and media kits.
- Maintain and optimize ImmDef’s digital presence through digital ads, meaningful and timely audience engagement, timely scheduling of assets and captions with high attention to detail. Stay up to date with platform updates and trends to maximize engagement.
- Review digital analytics and trends and provide a weekly report to Communications team, highlighting successes and opportunities for improvement.
- Attend webinars and trainings, as needed, to stay up-to-date on best practices in communications, social media, and content creation.
- Ensure all content adheres to industry regulations and best practices for transparency, authenticity, and inclusion, including ADA compliance.
- Client Relations
- Meet with clients, their families, and other immigrant community members to understand their stories and their goals, in order to develop compelling content that promotes an engaging pro-immigrant narrative.
- Support current client-spokespeople and cultivate new ones, working with the communications team to assist clients with media training, preparation for interviews and public speaking, and accompanying them to interviews and events.
- Serve as primary liaison between former clients and ImmDef, sharing updates on events and resources.
- Respond to individual non-legal inquiries.
- Support logistics for client-centered events.
- Newsletters:
- Maintain and execute bi-monthly newsletters in collaboration with the Development and Communications teams.
- Draft varied newsletter copy via Mailchimp for A/B testing and sub-groups and utilize analytics to fine tune our approach.
- Website:
- Design, edit, and maintain a dynamic Wix website that accurately describes ImmDef’s work and programs and demonstrates our mission, through high-quality copywriting, photography, video, and graphics.
- Ensure all content adheres to industry regulations and best practices for transparency, authenticity, and inclusion, including ADA compliance.
- Use Google analytics and SEO optimization to increase organic search rankings and drive traffic from search engines to ImmDef's website to boost site views and audience conversion.
- Events
- Support communications needs for internal and external events, including fundraising, media, and client convenings, among others.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or a related field (Master's preferred), or equivalent work experience.
- Proven experience in communications and digital content creation. Previous immigrant advocacy experience preferred.
- Strong understanding of social media trends and algorithms, advertising, and digital marketing trends in the social justice and nonprofit market.
- Exceptional creative and storytelling skills.
- Excellent interpersonal communications skills, including curiosity and active listening, intended to create a safe and welcoming atmosphere for ImmDef’s clients.
- Strong graphic design, video and photography editing skills. Strong Canva and expert Adobe Suite skills preferred.
- Basic knowledge of Wix and website platform software, foundational HTML.
- Knowledge of Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager preferred.
- Proficiency in social media management tools and analytics platforms, including digital ads.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, and an ability to deliver high-quality results with minimal instruction and a short turn-around time.
- Team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Occasional evening and weekend work, and some travel may be required.
- Bilingual Spanish written and verbal skills required.
- Passion for immigration justice required.
- This position is not part of the ImmDef employee union bargaining unit.
Compensation:
- The range for base pay is $24.00 to $31.00 per hour, depending on experience.
Schedule:
- ImmDef’s standard work schedule is 35 hours per week, or 70 hours per pay period.
- Hybrid Work Schedule: Staff in non-exempt positions at ImmDef are expected to be at an ImmDef worksite a minimum of 4 days per week, with 1 day per week available to work remotely.
- As a member of ImmDef’s management team, you are expected to schedule your hours and on-site attendance to maximize your availability to your team, serving as a role model for effective work habits and professional conduct
Holidays and Paid Time Off :
- 13 paid holidays

Health, Dental and Vision Insurance:
- ImmDef provides health coverage on the first of the month following 30 days on the job.
- We cover 100% of premiums for our base dental and vision plans for our staff members and 75% of base plan dental and vision premiums for their dependents. ImmDef also covers 89% of the base plan medical premiums for our staff and 69% of the base plan medical premiums for their dependents.
FSA and Dependent Care FSA:
- ImmDef offers FSA plans to help offset the costs of eligible health care expenses for you, your spouse, and your eligible dependents using pre-tax dollars.
- We also offer Dependent Care FSA to pay for eligible dependent care services, such as preschool, summer day camp, before or after school programs, and child or adult daycare.
- Eligible for Parental Leave which includes six (6) weeks of ImmDef paid leave.
401(k) Retirement Savings Plan & Employer Matching:
- ImmDef staff are eligible to enroll in our 401(k) plans immediately upon hire, contributing pre-tax dollars towards their retirement goals
- After six months on staff, ImmDef will match 100% of contributions up to 3% of the employee’s salary
- Funds are vested immediately!
Public Service Loan Forgiveness:
- As a 501(c)3, full-time ImmDef staff with qualifying student loans are eligible for the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness
Parking and Public Transportation Stipends:
- Staff members assigned to an office without free on-site parking are eligible to receive a parking stipend of up to $105 per month in actual accrued parking or transportation costs, paid through a pre-tax commuter benefit account.
- Staff in all offices are eligible to receive a public transportation stipend of up to $100 per month in actual accrued public transportation costs.
Cell Phone Stipends:
- ImmDef provides a $15 monthly cell phone stipend to staff members whose job duties require them to consistently work at sites outside of ImmDef offices, or travel between ImmDef worksites, and whose jobs require use of their personal cell phones or communications that cannot be accomplished with ImmDef-issued equipment.
