Reimagine What’s Possible Air Products, a Fortune 500 industrial gas company, has an immediate opening for a Designer located at our Allentown headquarters or Houston, TX (residence based may be considered). This position is part of the Americas Operations Analytical Engineering Team. The team has overall responsibilities in each phase of the cradle to grave life cycle of process and product analytical instrumentation used at ASU, CO2, Generated Gases, He, HyCO and SMR operating facilities in North and South America. The team collaborates with the Customer Engineering and Fleet, Global Engineering Manufacturing and Technology, Quality, Procurement and Commercial teams.Job Duties
 

  • Design, specify and support installation of a wide variety of process and product analytical instrumentation and associated sample conditioning systems.
  • Develop drawings for instrument location, tube routing, instrument and tube support methods as well as the interconnection of tubing for process and analytical instrumentation based on review of Piping & Instrument Diagrams (P&ID), APCI Engineering Standards, specifications and manufacturers literature. Apply an understanding of the effects of environmental conditions and process conditions to determine the appropriate sheltering, conditioning, location, and mounting methods of instrumentation. Develop a comprehensive bill of material for required components.
  • Knowledgeable of the structure, symbols and notations of the Piping & Instrument Diagram (P&ID) and understand from these diagrams the location and inter-connection of instrumentation and control devices. Provide drafting support to the Engineer for the development of the P&ID.
  • Develop detailed drawings and bills of material for the fabrication of indoor and outdoor instrumentation and electrical control enclosures and assemblies. Have knowledge of, and the ability to specify and apply, industry standard instrumentation, A.C. / D.C. control and wiring devices, enclosures and environmental controls. Perform basic electrical design in accordance with the requirements of the National Electric Codes (NFPA). Develop wiring and “ladder” diagrams, tubing diagrams, instrument and device arrangement and support and routing of tubing and wiring to fully detail the assemblies. Knowledge of installation and wiring of basic PLC hardware components and electrical and electronic control fundamentals.
  • Develop detailed drawings for the fabrication of indoor and outdoor process analytical instrumentation enclosures, assemblies and bill of materials. This design activity encompasses the requirements for Control Panel Design in addition to knowledge of analyzer sample system design methods, arrangement of components, selection of industry standard components, methods of tube connections (e.g. Swagelok, VCR) routing, support and cleaning of tubing and components.
  • Initiate, oversee and review the work of outside engineering and fabrication firms in their development of a detailed design package, fabrication and supply of assemblies and systems. Participate in the inspection and testing of assemblies and systems to ensure the meet the intent of the design.
  • Assist project and plant teams in troubleshooting analytical instrumentation installations.
  • Participate in the eMOC process.
  • Document all analytical work as prescribed.
  • Effectively communicate in writing and verbally to acquire an understanding of the design requirements and to convey to others the system design, fabrication, installation and operating requirements and related safety issues. Ability and willingness to effectively communicate and collaborate with others.
  • Direct experience with analytical instrumentation design.
  • Ability to learn quickly, adapt to change, and eagerness to manage multiple priorities in parallel.
  • Approximately 15% travel in the Americas region

Minimum Qualifications
 

  • HS Diploma or GED
  • 3+ years’ experience in drafting and design

Preferred Requirements:
 

  • Associate's degree in design drafting or technical discipline
  • Bentley MicroStation CAD V8 software or Autodesk AutoCAD for preparation of (2D) instrument, mechanical and electrical drawings
  • Analytical instrumentation design
  • Image (.tif, .pdf) editing software and document management systems and MS Office
  • Structure, symbols and notations of the Piping & Instrument Diagram (P&ID)
