Position Description: A Claims Adjuster analyzes coverage for claims submitted under the applicable policy form. The duties of a Claim Adjuster include discussing claim facts and coverage issues with insureds, defense counsel and/or coverage counsel. Claims Adjusters must possess critical thinking and strong oral/written communication skills.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing submitted claims for coverage and making a determination as to whether a matter is covered under the applicable policy.
  • Investigating coverage issues.
  • Conducting timely claim investigations, including gathering documents, video and other evidence, conducting telephone interviews of Insureds, claimants and witnesses.
  • Establishing and revising claims reserves based on claims developments and counsel liability assessments.
  • Adhering to fair claims-handling practices and regulations.
  • Drafting claim acknowledgment letters and emails.
  • Drafting coverage determination letters, including reservation of rights and denial letters.
  • Drafting large loss reports for claims exceeding claims-handling authority and communicating with the policy Underwriters regarding such claims.
  • Appointing defense counsel, coverage counsel and/or vendors, as appropriate.
  • Enforcing Terms of Engagement Letters and/or Statements of Work with defense counsel, coverage counsel, and/or vendors.
  • Obtaining updates from defense counsel, coverage counsel, vendors and/or the Insured, as appropriate.
  • Updating claims diary as needed based on activity.
  • Timekeeping for billing purposes.
  • Authorizing settlements based on liability and other considerations after receiving approval from claims management or Underwriters.
  • Conduct detailed bill reviews to ensure appropriate payment.
  • Reviewing, approving, and paying invoices.
  • Maintaining a claim file by accurately documenting all communications, activity, etc.
  • Communicating with brokers and clients to obtain information necessary for processing claims.
  • Adhering to company policy and procedures.

Education and Experience:

  • Adjuster License(s) required.
  • 2 – 5 years claims-handling experience required.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.

 

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, a Claims Adjuster will occasionally be required to stand; walk; sit, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms, balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. A Claims Adjuster must occasionally lift and/or move up to 5 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
